OUR MAIN STORY THIS MORNING :- IT IS NOW TIME TO BOOK FOR THE SARL RADIO TECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUMS IN GAUTENG JOHANNESBURG COMING UP SOON

>> Tony Voorveld ZS6CCD will be delivering the keynote address entitled "The Magic Lamps". The lecture is accompanied by demonstrations depicting the evolution of the valve from the early experiments by Thomas Edison (the Edison effect) to the development of the diode, triode and x-ray tube, thus opening the door to the modern electronics industry. As with all previous lectures by Tony, this one promises to be full of action and interesting demonstrations. His type of presentation is one of a kind and to newcomers the advice is "don't miss it"

The RTA will be held in Johannesburg on 23 August and in Pretoria on 13 September. Get full details on the SARL web home page. Pre-booking save money as walk-in attendants pay an additional R100. The closing date for bookings is 5 days before each event.
>> IARU YOUTH AWARD FOR A YOUNG SOUTH AFRICAN

>> Michel Mynhardt, ZS6YH, the SARL youth coordinator, has been awarded the "Outstanding Young Radio Amateur of the Year Award by IARU Region 1. Mitchel became a radio amateur in his early teens and has been active on both local and international competitions. He has served the East Rand Radio Club as youth coordinator and was for the past six years also involved with JOTA and the Voortrekkers.

Outstanding Youth Ham Award is intended to recognize a young radio amateur who has demonstrated his or her dedication to Amateur Radio through his or her activities in the year of 2013. The award will be presented to Mitchel at the Radio Technology in Action Symposium to be held on 13 September 2014 by the IARU Secretary, Dennis Green, ZS4BS. The event will take place at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria.
Congratulations to Mitchel. May the award be an inspiration for future activities and dedication to promote amateur radio to the youth.

>> Hans Kappetijn ZS6KR from the Pretoria amateur radio club was awarded the Voortrekkers goldmedal for special service to the youth at PARC's AGM on 26 July 2014. Andries Visagie ZS6VL National coordinator for CQ Hou Koers did a presentation on young people and ham radio. CQ Hou Koers received good exposure too.

CQ Hou Koers is the Voortrekkers national amateur radio communications day. Hans has been helping the Voortrekkers for a number of years to relay messages during CQ Hou Koers from his well-equipped station. He also handles call-ins prior to and after the event.

The Voortrekkers' sincere thanks to ZS6PTA and outgoing chairman Pierre ZS6PJH for the opportunity to do the presentation.

RAE
>> The registrations for the RAE on 16 October 2014 opened 1st August 2014. Candidates are requested to use only the online registration system and to ensure that all payments and documents are handed in on time. The link for registration can be found at licensing on the left hand side of the SARL webpage. Candidates already registered for the May 2014 RAE but for some reason could not wrote or pass the exam can use their username and password for the registration page to login and update their information for the coming examination.

Good luck with the preparations and thank you to everyone who co-operates to make the RAE a success.

All the exam centre managers are requested to check and update their information.

>> MURRAY NIMAN G6YB APPOINTED RSGB SPECTRUM MANAGER
The RSGB's Board of Directors has appointed Murray Niman, G6JYB, to the position of Chairman of its Spectrum Forum. The Spectrum Forum brings together the RSGB with special interest groups within the UK amateur community that share an interest in spectrum management. Murray is no stranger to spectrum matters, having held the post of RSGB Microwave Manager since January 2007. He succeeds the former Spectrum Chair John Gould, G3WKL, who was recently elected as RSGB President. Murray represented the SARL at the interim IARU Region 1 VHF/UHF/Microwave meeting held last week.

>> At the AGM of the Zululand Amateur Radio Club, held on the 27th July 2014 in Mandeni, the following Committee members were elected to serve the members of the club for the forthcoming year.

SUMMITS ON THE AIR
>> Andrew, ZS2G, and Mandy, ZS2AV, are hoping to activate Kompassberg SOTA ZS/EC-002 on Sunday 3 Aug 2014. They will use a FT-817ND running 5 Watt SSB on 7 090 kHz. The antenna will be a dipole on a 4 m telescopic painter's pole.

CONTEST NEWS
>> This afternoon from 13:00 to 16:30 UTC you can participate in the South African Radio League HF Phone Contest and try to contact as many amateurs in Southern Africa as possible on the 20, 40 and 80 m amateur bands. The exchange is a RS report and a consecutive serial number starting at 001. The following frequencies must be used - 14 125 to 14 300 kHz; 7 063 to 7 100 and 7 130 to 7 200 kHz and 3 603 to 3 650 and 3 700 to 3 800 kHz.

Please avoid 7 070 kHz for the first hour of the contest, the South African Radio League Youth Net will be active there from 15:00 tot 16:00.

You can participate as a single operator single band; a single operator all band; a multi operator single band or a multi operator all band station. Phone contacts count 1 point, count two points for each area worked on each band and count 2 points for each station contacted on all three bands. Contacts with DX are allowed.

Logs must be submitted to the Bloemfontein Amateur Radio Club by 10 August 2014 and can be sent to zs4bfn@gmail.com or zs4bfn@netactive.co.za. There will be a lucky draw for an ARRL Antenna Handbook valued at R900, to take part in the draw, submit a log sheet with a minimum of 15 contacts.

>>The South African Radio League YL Sprint takes place on Saturday 9 August from 09:00 to 10:00 UTC. This is a fun activity to celebrate National Women's Day and it is a phone sprint on the 40-metre band (7 063 to 7 100 and 7 130 to 7 200 kHz). The exchange is a RS report and YL or OM.

Contacts between YL stations are worth 5 points; contacts between YL and OM stations are worth 3 points, and contacts between OM stations are worth 1 point. Log sheets must be submitted by 16 August to zs4bfn@gmail.com or zs4bfn@netactive.co.za

PROPAGATION REPORT
>> Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the expected solar activity will be at moderate levels. There is a chance for M-class solar flares.
If you want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be around 75.
The three DX bands from 20 to 15 m will provide some DX fun with 20 m providing the best openings with 15 m not far behind.
